"The Ritual Continues" contains the oldest songs available by DJAM KARET. Seven of the tracks are from live shows performed in February 1987 and two of the tracks are recorded in January 1982 under the band name HAPPY CANCER. Besides some voices here and there, the album is all-instrumental. The album became "#4 Album Of 1988" in Electronic Musician magazine. Strangely enough I wouldn't call it an electronic album. There are Ambient influences and reminiscences to TANGERINE DREAM on it, but there's also the typical DJAM KARET progressive guitar rock blended with reminiscences to KiING CRIMSON and PINK FLOYD. The highlight is "Technology and Industry" where some of the KING CRIMSON similarities are shown. This is an interesting release all-in-all, although it isn't one of DJAM KARET's best albums.

DJAM KARET was founded in 1984 and they are playing guitar dominated all-instrumental progressive rock. They are mixing elements from New Age, Heavy Metal, Ambient, Eastern- and Electronic Music, and have created a unique sound that is hard to compare to any other band. You can hear some KING CRIMSON, OZRIC TENTACLES and influences from the classic bands such as GENESIS and PINK FLOYD. — The complexity of DJAM KARET is similar to KING CRIMSON, and they have received great reviews in big magazines such as ROLLING STONE, Guitar Player, Bass Player, Keyboard, CD Review and Electronic Musician. They are excellent musicians and besides a numerous of releases with DJAM KARET, they've also done soundtracks for Television, Motion Pictures and TV-commercials. Although their music isn't easy listening, they have been played a lot by Radio stations, and that is fairly unusual in this genre. Besides Canada, they have fans in Brazil, Australia and the former Soviet Union among others. — Their music is sometimes emotionally dark and quiet with floating keyboards, and sometimes heavy, exquisite and aggressive rock with pulsating rhythms. They are mixing electric instruments with acoustic ones, and they have a great sense for good and melodic music. "The Devouring" contains 10 songs that varies in length between 4:19 to 11:04. You can't find any 3-minutes hit songs. — This is their first album that isn't released on their own label. Besides two electric guitars, bass and drums, there's instruments such as Mellotron, Koto, Theremin and African drums, together with modern instruments such as samplers, guitar Synth and E Bow. — In my opinion, this is one of the best albums to come out in 1997, with the exception of 2-3 songs. But considering that this is an all-instrumental album, this is a good rating. This CD makes me want to hear more of DJAM KARET. Recommended!

Albums such as Pianocircus's Skin and Wire may not be in contention to win polls such as Sea of
Tranquility's "best of the year" award, but that does not mean that they are without merit, or that they should not be in your CD collection. Most progressive music fans enjoy a touch of jazz, especially when it is blended with other influences. Skin and Wire blends jazz with ambient, or maybe that should be ambient with jazz, because the overriding feel of the album is of creating an ambience. The music, predominantly quiet and peaceful, could form the soundtrack of a movie of your own creation. Just sit back and relax....

Pianocircus was originally formed in 1989 as a six-piano ensemble, using either acoustic grands or digital pianos. The group uses these instruments in combination with MIDI and various electronica. On Skin and Wire the ensemble team up with Bill Bruford, widely renowned for his drumming skills both as a jazz and rock artist, to play the music of Colin Riley. Colin is a modern British "classical" composer who is known for exploring the integration of both improvisation and electronic elements: in effect a fusion taking ideas from the classical, rock and jazz worlds. On this showing, it works!

The results, as evidenced by Skin and Wire are always enjoyable, whether you choose to listen intently, focussing on the nuances of the performers' forays, or have the music on as an aid to meditation, or ambience setting. Pianos and synthesizers are much in evidence (played by the ensemble of David Appleton, Adam Caird, Kate Halsall and Semra Kurutaç) but, despite the name of the ensemble, there are other enjoyable sonorities: Julian Crampton's bass guitar and, of course, Bill Bruford's richly diverse drum and percussion playing, from which the main jazzy vibe of the music arises.

As an aside, the promo notes say that this will be Bruford's last album of fresh material. If that proves to be true then it is a sad day because he is clearly still at the top of the game. Still, after some 40 years in the business, who would begrudge him some rest? But can a jazz musician ever rest? Watch out for a few live appearances....

In any case, should the promo company be right, then this is a very fitting way for Bruford to end his album-making career! It is a fine album that should be enjoyed by all progressive fans with a metal hangover!
