EU Clears GM Buyout of Saab Automobile
BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Commission said on Tuesday it had cleared plans by General Motors Corp (GM.N) to acquire all shares of Swedish car maker Saab Automobile which it does not already own, from Investor AB (INVEb.ST). Investor said last month that GM would pay $125 million to exercise its option to buy the investment group's 50 percent stake in Saab. GM said it intends to expand Saab's sales, line-up and distribution.
"Since the concentration involves a change from joint control of Saab by GM and Investor to sole control of Saab by GM, there is no new combination or additional overlap in the relevant markets," the Commission said in a statement.
It said GM/Saab would continue to face significant competition in all car markets.
GM has owned 50 percent of the small Swedish luxury carmaker since 1990 when it bought into the loss-making company.
Saab has struggled amid growing competition, largely due to its comparatively limited output. Last year saw Saab produced 128,000 cars.
